    About Square

Square sells point of sale hardware and software plus business tools. Hardware includes registers, handheld devices, terminals and card readers, taking card payments by swipe, insert, tap or QR code, with an offline mode.

Beyond payments there is an online store, online ordering, invoices and an appointments tool. Customer tools cover a customer directory, loyalty, gift cards and email marketing, and staff tools cover rostering, time tracking and payroll preparation.

Sales dashboards show your results, and you can move your Square balance to your bank. Square also has a marketplace of third-party apps.

Pricing: Square has a free plan with no setup or monthly fees, where you pay a processing fee on each card transaction. Paid Plus plans add features for restaurants, retail and appointments, and hardware is sold separately. Next-day transfers to your bank are free, and instant transfers carry a small fee.

    Why it suits tourism businesses

Square names hospitality, retail, beauty and services businesses as its focus. Cellar doors, cafes, gift shops, visitor centres and attractions with a shop or kitchen can use the same system for counter sales, online orders and gift cards.

For businesses that sell in person and online, one system keeps sales reports and customers together. Square is a point of sale, so check whether it covers tour or stay bookings for your needs.
